Topeka dispatch reports Cowley county farmer Carl Carlson and his wife were terrorized by extortionists. An anonymous note demanded 8000 then 3000 under threat of arson and murder. Mrs Carlson, severely burned, died after recounting the blackmail attempt.
Denver leaders of the National Live Stock Association plan to challenge Colorado and federal inspection rules. Edward A. Rela, Omaha cattle shipper, serves as test subject after being jailed for shipping cattle into Colorado without the state health certificate. The case seeks habeas corpus to decide if federal health inspections override state branding and fees.
Ulaskow June 11 Shamrock expected to reach New York around August 15. The cup challenger Shamrock I and the Kar lad sailed a trial race with 43 miles. The Shamrock I beat the Kurd by four minutes in the first round and by thirty minutes eighteen seconds overall. The Nevada defeated Tutty by twelve minutes forty seconds.
Justice Bradley in the Equity Court ruled in the Manila Bay and Santiago Bay prize cases. The decision favors the claimants on vessels captured but holds that property ashore and cargo recovered from sunken ships were not prize. Vessels sunk and later raised are considered captured, and bounty on unclaimed property is prize.

Forest Raynor was named temporary receiver after a protracted directors’ meeting that included Edward R. Thomas and William H. Kimball. The bank reported sizable assets and a large debit balance amid reports of a $15.6 million indebtedness to Henry Marquand & Company.
Thacker West Virginia June 27 The Associated Press says that Williamson officials and local lawmen deny reports that Huffard was fired upon from ambush and that the railroad station was riddled with bullets. They state no such shooting occurred since the miners struck. C W Burke leader of the strikers calls the reports false and cites the strike arose after the superintendent fired union men and refused to discharge non union workers.
News from Bluefield West Virginia reports severe flood damage to rail lines from Ennin to Vivian and to the temporary tracks. Trains run to Coopers with hopes of reaching Ennis this evening. Destitute miners with families leave the valley as 20,000 pounds in revenue loss is noted.
Two masked men entered the Fashion saloon at midnight in Spokane territory, held up patrons with guns, and fled with about 75 dollars in cash and 150 dollars in jewelry. They ignored a 300 dollar bank roll tucked under a towel and are believed to be Republic residents.

Thousands work around Welch repairing the Norfolk and Western roadbed and tracks. Estimated death toll around sixty on the Elkhorn and Tug rivers.
