Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov gave a rare press conference in San Francisco stating that United Nations meetings this week achieved positive results. He cited many talks and contacts as contributing to progress across several fields, though he could not single out the most important achievement.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles returns to San Francisco from a Naps Valley trip for a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Molotov at the Mark Hopkins Hotel. Sources say they discussed the June 22 downing of a U.S. Neptune bomber near the Bering Straits and broader topics ahead of the Geneva summit.
Hollywood on June 15 marks the uncontested divorce of singer Vir ginia O'Brien from actor John Feggo. The decree followed testimony alleging a strike by Feggo and lack of support for their three children.
Pittsburgh June 25 The CIO United Steelworkers and U S Steel resumed wage talks amid routine strike preparations for as many as 600 000 workers. McDonald and Stephens led two hour talks with no comment and no set date for the next session. A union spokesman said a phone call could reunite them.
Senator Knowland labeled the Russian attack on a U S Navy patrol plane over the sea deliberate and an act by rogue Communist pilots. White House and State Department avoided judgments on intent. In Tokyo police report a separate Indochina incident tied to Communists occurred earlier in Peiping with casualties.
Pi Three gasoline barges caught fire during a thunder storm in Chattanooga Tennessee today. At least 10 persons were burned or injured including two firefighters. One man may have been killed. The barges had just arrived at a downtown Texas Co terminal when the blaze started. Workers cut the craft adrift as they burned and they drifted down river into an uninhabited riverbank area. Cause was not immediately known.
In Belfast on June 25, the auctioneer’s chant of Going, Going, Gone ended with the floor collapsing into a cellar. Fifty bidders tumbled into the space below while police attributed the accident to weak timbers. No serious injuries were reported.
Washington June 25 A House Ways and Means committee members tentatively scaled down a Democratic plan to liberalize social security benefits to reduce costs. The changes would limit 60 age benefits to widowed women after 55 and require others to wait until 65. disabled workers would gain immediate benefits only if disabled at 50 or older, with others waiting to 65.
CHICAGO June 23 A U S Commission on Intergovernmental Relations spokesman said reclamation projects are shifting from need to politics. Dr George C Benson urged greater state and local funding participation to curb federal pork barrel expansion across grants in aid direct spending and interstate commerce control.
Senate Republican Leader William F Knowland said Memphis decision to build a city plant does not alter U S administration support for the Dixon Yates project. He said TVA should build transmission lines to link with the private plant west of the Mississippi and noted fights in Congress over a 6 5 million request for the lines.
President Giovanni Gronchi narrowing the search for a new premier to Antonio Segni a 64 year old Sardinian lawyer and Christian Democratic party member Segni considered the likely premier designate to replace anti Communist Mario Scelba who resigned after his party revolted against him in Rome June 25 1950.
New York June 25 UP The crew of the American freighter Steel Admiral rescued 186 persons from a stranded motorship in a storm off the Philippine Islands Most survivors were women and children They were brought to Manila last night by the freighter operated by U S Steel Company's Isthmian Steamship Line
The Atomic Energy Commission announced a sale of 30 tons of heavy water to France for use in two French research reactors. The shipments will occur between 1956 and 1958. The United States has also authorized heavy water sales to Australia, India, and Italy for research reactors.
The Tennessee Valley Authority mailed a 25 million dollar check to the federal treasury in partial repayment of funds invested by the government. General Manager A. J. Wagner said TVA’s total repaid to date reaches 151,131,519 dollars, financed by TVA power operations.
President Eisenhower formally signed the Austrian state treaty in Lancaster New Hampshire, pledging end of occupation by year end. The pact requires ratification by Britain France and the Soviet Union before taking effect.
