Buckingham Palace bulletins report the king in satisfactory condition with a cheerful appearance. By 6 15 PM the monarch is noted to have passed a good day, taken nourishment, and shown improved strength as temperature returns to normal.
In London the king’s coronation eve service drew silent crowds at St Paul’s and St Margaret’s as the Duke of Cambridge led the procession. Archbishops Canterbury and York presided with exhortations to save the king. Cabinet ministers and peers attended. Telegrams from India, Australia and Africa reported similar supplications.
Admiral Dewey testified before the Senate Committee on the Philippines detailing early Manila operations under his command. He asserted the city was not surrendered to him, adding a significant note to the surrender history and clarifying the sequence of events in Philippine waters.
Storms swept across Indiana and neighboring states causing widespread destruction. In Indianapolis area paths stretched fifteen miles with three to six mile width, damaging wire networks and farms, destroying barns, and killing two people James Van Hay and James Bailey. Estimated total damage reached 1.5 million dollars. Marietta Ohio reports over half a million in losses with multiple injuries. Sioux City and South Dakota reports cite 500 thousand dollars in damages though life loss reports are exaggerated in Aberdeen area.
Washington notes the House adopted the conference report on the Isthmian canal bill by 282 to 7. Morgan presented the conference report and the bill moves to the President. A general deficiency appropriation approved 45000 to cover unpaid expenses from McKinley’s death, excluding government employes.
A 23 year old from Los Angeles, E Arbuckle, shot and killed Hayes, a local colored man, after a short fight over money. Hayes died shortly after being found near the Washoe County Bank. Arbuckle was arrested by Constable Leeper after the incident at the Palm Saloon. A second item reports J W Hopkins of Great Western Mines visiting Steamboat town on business.
Dr G H Thoma and Senator Flanigan on South Side will stage Carnival week displays with 200 Japanese lanterns among trees. The Nevada Power Company dresses the Iron bridge in colored lights as The Gazette notes more residences plan electrical effects next week. J Meyers dies at county hospital from a long abscess of the lungs after transfer from Verdi last Tuesday.
Work began today on the carnival midway with ten attractions on Commercial Row between Virginia and Sierra and five between Virginia and Center streets. Booths will fill remaining spaces along both streets. Weather forecast calls for fall tonight and Friday with warmer temperatures near Carson City.
