Portola Fire Destroys Four Buildings On Main Street
Four large Main Street buildings in Portola burned this morning starting around 1 12 oclock in the I C O F building. The blaze scorched adjacent structures, but was brought under control near the Ure station. No injuries reported. The lower floor housed a lodge room and upper floor a dance hall. Cause unclear. Nearby Taylorsville also suffered a major fire affecting half the residence area and several shops.

Woman Suspected in Diamond Merchant Murder
Mrs Vanders, arrested in Raton on suspicion of involvement in the murder of Joseph Morne, a diamond merchant, was grilled by Kansas City police. She denied aiding Marino to the hotel where the body with a crushed skull lay and diamonds worth $2000 disappeared. DARI S June 24 Charles R Patterson of the University of Edmonton Alberta Canada and emer Toulon of Philadelphia kept on YMCA tent painting day and frenze under a recent German bombardment and gas attack. One shell struck alongside the tent and upset a stove which set fire to some of the contents of the store. Neither man was hit. The Germans continued to throw shells into the flames driving out men who were trying to sire the supplies. Patterson 28 trembling from shell shock but is continuing his work.
