Bowles spoke after appeals from four top officials for effective price control and emphasized the need for a strong measure to combat inflation.
Paris reported that Britain the United States and Russia agreed on evacuating troops from Italy and Bulgaria within 90 days after peace treaties take effect. A four power Allied inspectorate commission for Italy was proposed with four ambassadors in Rome to supervise treaty terms. Molotov and Byrnes endorsed the plan and planned further talks.
Washington June 204 The house expenditures committee disapproved a federal agency reorganization plan proposed by President Truman. Rep Pittenger led three resolutions opposing the plan, criticizing centralization of housing activities and creation of a welfare department under a cabinet officer. The 60 day deadline runs to July 14. Rep Hoffman noted the 10 to 3 committee vote in closed session.

New York June 20 AP Members of the United Nations atomic energy commission weighed a Russian plan for a world convention to outlaw atomic weapons. If adopted it would require the United States to destroy all its atom bombs within three months. The proposal would be ratified by half the world’s nations and would set up two committees for peaceful exchange of information and international controls with sanctions for unlawful use. It differs from Baruch’s plan by removing control from the United States through an international convention. Soviet delegate Andrei A. Gromyko presented the counter-plan, signaling a likely extension of preliminaries in the search for a means to curb atomic warfare. The delegates are in recess until next Tuesday.
CAIRO June 20 uP Egypt's foreign minister said the Nile kingdom will grant asylum to Haj Amin Al Husseini the mufti of Jerusalem. The mufti arrived in Egypt and asked for refuge stating he is a political refugee. King Farouk advised the British and the royal palace confirmed the visit and request for sanctuary.
Governor Ernest Gruening of Alaska appeals to Chicago businessmen for support to establish a direct airline route between Chicago and Anchorage Alaska. He urges widespread backing to improve northern air access and trade ties.
The Portland chamber of commerce asks police to assist a hospitality campaign for visitors. Acting Police Chief Leon Jenkins is urged to train traffic officers to answer visitors questions about Portland's scenery and history and to share tips on where to catch a big chinook salmon.
Albert Speer, former German munitions minister, testified before the international military tribunal that he intended to kill Adolf Hitler in the chancellery bunker in Berlin during March last year. He described obtaining poison gas and his warning that Germany could not continue modern war.
