MILWAUKEE June 18 Dist Atty William J McCauley planned rebuttal testimony for about three hours as Milton Babich 19 neared the end of a first degree murder trial The defense rested after Babich said he planned to tell his wife Kathleen 18 about the killing of her sister Patricia Birmingham 16 whose body was found in the Milwaukee river with a concrete block tied to her feet Babich and Kathleen eloped to Kalamazoo Mich three days before the body was found Their baby is due in mid July.
HOWELLS Neb June 18 A gun battle at a country crossroads ended the flight of two bandits with a loot of 75000 in jewels. The two were shot and killed late yesterday by state patrolmen and a county sheriff. The sheriff was wounded in both hands.
Chesterfield, June 18. A 14 year old, Brian Mitchell, swallowed 24 cartridge casings, ten buttons, two farthings, and a length of metal chain to win a halfpenny bet from a classmate. He collected the halfpenny and swallowed it too. He is in a hospital now on bread and potatoes.
In Airmont City Illinois two men were shot during a riot tied to bitter union rivalry at the American Zinc plant. About 300 workers clashed in front of city hall as authorities restored order by midnight. Serious injuries were Joseph Petroski 25 and Epmenio Rodriguez 58.
Four reserve officers from the Cleveland area died when an air force training plane crashed into Cumberland mountain near New Cumberland Pennsylvania. Lieut. Arthur Lloyd of Middletown Air Force Base reported the victims were four occupants of the craft.
Washington June 18 A Senate test on labor unrest is expected Monday as Democrats push five plans to handle strikes imperiling national welfare. US Mine Workers leader John L Lewis backs Pepper and three other Democrats for fighting against a bill seen as crippling to the administration.
Western European foreign ministers from Britain France and Benelux nations wrap a two day session in Luxembourg reporting full accord on their world role. The ministers held a three hour meeting in the Luxembourg chamber of deputies with no disagreements and discussed Germany's future and the five nations’ influence.
Washington June 18 The House Un American Activities Committee says it will not censor textbooks or curb academic freedom. A letter distributed to educators says it only seeks to check serious allegations by the National Sons of the American Revolution about alleged Communist propaganda in some books. The committee stressed it does not interfere with academic freedom and does not oppose studying Marxist works for comparison.
