Washington June 17 The president vetoed the military appropriation bill and returned it to Congress with a message disapproving the provision to oust Major General Leonard Wood from chief of staff The president argued the army is vital to the people and that legislation should follow thorough deliberation and care He cannot surrender constitutional responsibility in shaping such laws The message explains the veto without approval of the bill.
The Crescent Literary Society of Sparks High School will hold its final debate Tuesday at p.m. in the ME church to decide who earns the honor. The question: should nominations for all elective offices, including national convention delegates, be made by direct primaries. Affirmative contestants: Clay Willis, Marion Young, Mary Raitt, Bonnie Stevens. Negative contestants: Hazel McCarty, Flora McDonald, Chas. Reilly, Eugene Austin. Public invited.
Frank Branigan was found guilty of attempting to provoke an assault by Justice of the Peace J. Davis. He received a $10 fine, posted bond, and plans to appeal. Prosecution witness Prank Gallery testified Branigan swore and insulted him while Gallery moved rocks from his business on Fourth Street.
At Angiers France June 17 a crash during the three city air race injured several. Allard's mechanician broke a leg and pilot Da Bussy suffered internal injuries. Gossengs broke both legs. Sixteen aviators started the triangle course of about 292 miles with two prize blocks of 5000 dollars each.
Irwin Poindexter aged 4 died in Lake City while visiting relatives. He wandered Friday evening and fell into a fish pond. his body was recovered after an extended search. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Poindexter and leaves brothers and sisters. Funeral plans posted for Lake City.
Walter Geddes, who made the Daley mine a Goldfield producer, is back from New York City and plans to stay. He seeks a copper mine near Wapuska and a gold mine near Jane, both expected to start output before the season ends.

Nurse Mrs Cunningham and Dr Hitch describe the scene as the coroner s court hears of poison bi chloride mercury and a wedding certificate allegedly burned. Evidence points to Kitt visiting the dying patient and urging care while accusations of whisky linger as the case continues.
A fire from a kitchen stovepipe at 534 Gault house spread rapidly toward Police Judge Stanaway’s two story cottage on North Center Street. Neighbors helped rescue belongings as Marl Burks sounded the alarm and firefighters battled the blaze. Charles Gavit’s insured home suffered heavy loss while J W Sthaw’s family faced up to 200 dollars in uninsured damage. Stanaway’s loss runs to several hundred dollars. Chief Hawecroft cut his hand on broken glass while directing efforts.
Mrs R G Harvey wife of a Vancouver real estate operator and their one year old baby Reginald were smothered to death yesterday in the sand near the foot of a steep incline four miles from New Westminster. Mr Harvey who was driving was seriously hurt and two older children escaped unhurt.
