At Vulman shipyards in Hamburg the Brazilian liner Avare capsized during hauling out of drydock. More than a score of men were trapped in the hold as the vessel listed. Those on deck escaped into the canal and were rescued by motor boats and the harbor fire department.
Mrs Afella Bjurstedt Mallory, American women's champion, fell in the Kent championship semi final at Beckenham to Miss Melkane 6-1 2-6 6-8. The match drew about 5000 spectators as Melkane, a Swedish girl, showed her best form to date. Mallory’s defeat was her second since arriving in England, with Roehampton and Wimbledon expected to see a comeback.
Dr. Jared H. Miller of Los Angeles sues Detroit attorney George W. Moore for 155000 dollars alleging a false arrest on an embezzlement charge from his wife’s estate. The federal complaint filed in Detroit claims Moore had Miller arrested.
Premier Poincare departed Paris for London to discuss the general political situation with Prime Minister Lloyd George. The June 16 dispatch from Paris by the Associated Press notes the high level talks planned between the two leaders.
A tropical storm struck Brownsville Texas with torrential rains and winds up to 24 mph early today. No damage was reported though Mission logged the heaviest rainfall at 2.38 inches.

A Manchurian proclamation creates a self-governing three-province structure while keeping Manchuria part of China, naming Chiang Tso-lin as commander in chief.
Signor Guglielmo Marconi announced on arrival of his yacht that experiments on the Atlantic show radio messages can circle the globe. He cited a past maximum range of 12,260 miles and noted tests sending 100 to 200 words per minute, predicting World wireless will cut long distance communication costs.
Ahmadabad British India June 16 By the Associated Press Quereshi the noncooperationist leader in British India who took over after Gandhi was arrested has been sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of 500 rupees with an additional three months imprisonment in default for payment
President Harding sent to the Senate the names of several registry appointees to land offices. The list includes Bber Melvin Steninger, Biko Ney, and Ney. Washington date June 16.
Cincinnati June 16. B M Jewell president of the railway employee department of the AF of L authorized to seek a joint conference with United Mine Workers officials. Rail unions prepare to formalize a strike vote showing overwhelming support for a July 1 walkout, while 500000 coal miners already on strike. Union leaders blame road chiefs for wage cuts and vow to canvass after the AFL meeting to gauge support.
Washington June 1 The annual naval appropriation for Mare Island Cal yard was adopted without objection. The measure provides 2 800 000 for dikes and dredging with 500 000 available immediately, an increase of 250 000 over the committee plan and equal to the house vote. Senator Poindexter opposed permanent abandonment of the yard while Senator Johnson sought funds for Mare Island.
San Francisco June 161 Police statewide were asked to hunt for A. B. Arleigh former president of the Bank of Tracy who disappeared June 8 with 12000 in cash and 66000 in negotiable securities according to his wife Mrs Lorraine Arleigh He was to face a Stockton court but did not appear on the summons.
Automobiles followed a wealthy couple from the opera house to their Becket residence in an exclusive district. Bandits robbed Mrs. F. H. Beckett of 6000 dollars in jewels and her husband of 18 dollars in a midnight attack.
Edward Forsam and J Kennedy battled a massive silver tip grizzly on White Creek near Terrace B C A 1800 pound monster twelve by nine foot pelt and an eighteen by nine inch footprint. Kennedy fired four shots from a .303 rifle then Forsam killed it with a heart shot as the bear stood eleven feet tall.
At the Hague the first private meeting introduced a Komme Ltusian commission with three sub commissions to study credits debts and private property held by foreigners in Russia. Eleven members per sub commission will include one from Britain France Italy Japan and Holland with remaining seats allocated by other powers. Smaller states fear domination by bigger powers at the talks.
St Louis June 16 Kenneth Williams belted his sixteenth home run of the season in the game with Washington. Zachary started for the visitors as Williams moved one ahead of Rogers Hornsby who tied the mark with fifteen in a Brooklyn game. McManus of the Browns homered with Garber on base.
Baseball results from the National League show Boston and Philadelphia games. Boston beat Chicago 6 to 1 in 12 innings with Jones Osborn Hodge Kaufmann and O'Farrell among players. Philadelphia defeated Cincinnati 7 to 2 with Ring Harris and Peters contributing. New York defeated Pittsburg 1 to 0 as Glaner Yellowhorse and Hollingsworth pitched. Brooklyn and St Louis game listed with a scoreline of 2 to 1.
Athens Ga June 16 A diploma was awarded to Alexander Hamilton Stephens vice president of the Confederate states at the university commencement. Stephens recalled that in 1882 he did not take a diploma because it cost $2 and the state could not justify the expense.
Brussels reports rumors in the Belgian chamber that Emile Vandervelde, former justice minister, who went to Russia to aid social revolutionists, may have been assassinated in Moscow. No Belgian confirmation.
Washington June 15 to June 16 reports show liquor sales aboard shipping board vessels beyond the three mile limit allowed under new treasury rules. The House Merchant Marine Committee rejected the Bankhead amendment removing government aid from ships selling liquor and prepared for a record vote on the ship subsidy bill amid ongoing amendments.
A Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train wrecked at Allaire results in the death of Jerome Stewart of West Point Cadets and injuries to several passengers. A young woman escaped by jumping from the automobile. The locomotive overturned. two coach cars derailed but stayed upright with occupants aboard.
Jefferson county grand jury recommends that the next legislature enact laws making white capping a felony punishable by imprisonment after expressing regret at not identifying the persons guilty of decoying Birmingham citizens from their homes and whipping them.

WHITE PLAINS N Y June 16 Walter S Ward pleaded not guilty at arraignment on a first degree murder indictment for the shooting of Clarence Peters.
Minneapolis reports that a card game helped trace a portion of bonds from the New York post office robbery. Postal inspectors linked a bond company's officer who, after losing, produced bonds and clipped coupons to cover a shortage. The winner attempted to cash them at a bank, which notified authorities. Two men have been indicted and a third held in the related federal case.
Washington June 16. A circulated petition among Republican members urged President Harding to uphold Alt. Gover policies in the Blair Dover controversy. About 150 signatures claimed Democrats hold key Treasury posts, while Secretary Mellon defended Republican control and dismissed charges as false and petty.
Bill Denson, a Black man who fled a county jail escape weeks earlier, was hanged today for attacking a seventy year old white woman. The gallows previously prepared was destroyed by lightning Tuesday, forcing construction of a new device.
