Defidency bill and land grants in California

Senator Plumb favors a Defidency bill granting California five percent of net public land sale proceeds. The House bill forfeiting unearned lands granted to the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad is reported from the Public Lands committee. Edwin Richards Convicted of Manslaughter in Helpler Case

In San Jose on June 16 the jury returned a manslaughter verdict against Edwin Richards for the death of Alpheus Helpler after a dispute at a field. Richards testified of prior family enmity and threats, with three shots fired as Helpler was restrained by the elder Richards. The elder Richards, nearly 70, faces trial on the 29th. The same edition reports a shipwreck near Suva involving the Syria-Benson with 480 indentured immigrants aboard, many lost or missing.

Balloon incident in Bordeaux injures American consul

At a Quaince balloon ascent a French soldier fired on American Consul George W. Rosevelt and wife. The bullet passed his hat and knocked him over. The assailant and two companions fled. Bordeaux authorities order an inquiry while the officer may have been mistaken for a civilian. Egyptian affairs report El Mahdi appoints a governor of Dongola and threatens Turkish forces in the Soudan.

Siamese Princes Tour Comstock Mines in Reno Visit

Princes Nares and Sonapandit of Siam, brothers of King Chulalon karn, visited the Comstock Saturday with Major Snayb and a Siamese party. They toured Union and C and C shafts, wore miners’ suits, and received guidance from E H Loftus and Patton. The trip aims to gather mining ideas for future Siamese prospects.

Fifty Dollars Reward for Coates House Damage
