Bear wreck in fog off Sugar Loaf rocks claims many lives
Five bodies recovered after the Pacific Coast steamer Bear wrecked near Sugar Loaf rock, Eureka. Two boats carried survivors ashore, with 62 aboard the tug Relief and about 182 aboard Rescue. Fog hampered rescue as battleship Oregon and Grace Dollar patrolled the area. Farmers gathered along the coast seeking aid as dawn broke.

Mexican bandits attack border patrol near Laredo
One hundred Mexican bandits crossed the Rio Grande to strike the American border patrol near San Ignacio, killing two and wounding five. Troops I and M of the idth cavalry under Maj. Alonzo Gray repelled the attack, with six Mexicans dead and several wounded. The clash began at two a.m. and lasted about 30 minutes under a bright moon.
