Important sections of the front between the Lys river and St Yves have been abandoned by the Germans. British troops pressed the retreating enemy closely and made progress east of Ploegsteert wood. Gen Plumer continued attacks east of Messines while Haig’s forces pressed near Gaspard village. French gains quiet on the Aisne Verdun front, as German assaults on French posts were repulsed.

Willard was arrested and may be released at preliminary examination if evidence shows Holmes was intimate with Willard's wife, daughter of churchman J Holden Kimball.

Washington June 14 The senate finance committee cut the war tax bill by about 9 million, reducing taxes on athletic goods patent medicines perfumes and cosmetics to two percent. It kept rates on distilled spirits malt liquors wines and soft drinks near house levels, approving roughly 166 million in new revenue. The committee also endorsed Gore amendments imposing prohibitory taxes on cereals used to manufacture distilled spirits and barring their importation. Spirits tax remains 2.20 per gallon and malt at 2.75 a barrel.
