President Truman announced near agreement on a forthcoming Big Three conference with Stalin and Churchill aimed at easing Russian relations and resolving the Polish issue. He indicated the meeting would be held away from Washington at a time and place to be kept until arrival at the site.
SAN FRANCISCO June 13 The defeat of an Australian amendment cleared the way for approval in a United Nations conference committee of the Big Five demand for total veto control of proposed machinery for world security. The amendment would have removed the veto from steps to settle international disputes peacefully and limited it to use of force. It was voted down 20 to 10 with fifteen abstentions and five absences. Simultaneously small nations rallied behind a proposal to be promised another crack at the veto about 10 years hence, a plan Big Five oppose. Action followed three and a half hours of debate with 17 speeches.
New York June 13 The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. says a 200000 loan for Elliott Roosevelt was settled for 4000 through John Hartford. Caruthers Ewing, general counsel, notes the debt was written off in 1942 tax records and that Jesse Jones facilitated the compromise at the Roosevelt family’s request. Hartford regards Pegler column as substantially correct but not the whole story.
British 14th army troops pushed eastward from Toungoo against withdrawing Japanese, while southwest forces seized an enemy village near Tanbingon, 28 miles north northeast of Letpadan. Liberator bombers hit enemy concentrations six miles northwest of Bilin, near Moulmein. fires reported amid unclear results.
War bond sales in the seventh war loan drive totalled 5.28 billion dollars today, reaching 75.4 percent of the 7 billion quota. E bond sales stand at 2.377 billion dollars or 59.4 percent of the 4 billion goal.
Washington reports a new civilian travel curtailment for August through March 1946 to free Pullman cars and coaches for military use. Half of current Pullmans and 10 to 12 percent of coaches will be withdrawn, with 308,000 men daily moved as troops redeploy to the Pacific. Public cooperation urged. freight car production also placed on a high-priority wartime schedule.

Australian forces on Bougainville report the main drive along Bain road held by strong Hari river defenses. Left flank troops crossed the river and hold positions on both banks while advancing to higher ground near the Hari headwaters and into the Japanese garden area.

PROVO Utah June 13 Four Mexican farm workers are en route home today and 10 others from the Spanish Fork labor camp are on probation. Lee R Taylor emergency county farm labor director said charges include refusal to work at prevailing wage rates refusal to accept an assigned job inciting trouble at the camp or failing to obey laws of the community. The 14 Mexicans were given a hearing by war food administration officials.
Washington June 13 General George S Patton arrived at the national airport after an overnight flight from Los Angeles The unsmiling commander said I am no politician when asked to smile for a photo He was invited to visit President Truman at the White House this afternoon.
President Truman denounced the cost plus system for farm production in pending OPA extension legislation as bad and urged the House to reject Senator Wherry's amendment. Wherry vowed to fight to the last ditch claiming the amendment is warranted. House Republicans press for a six month OPA extension as farm leaders criticize the measure as inflationary and unworkable.
Senator Mitchell D Washington returning from a Senate war investigating committee trip across western Europe warned that Europe cannot rely on a snap of the fingers to open prosperity. He stressed European devastation, especially in Germany, where many towns are dead and sparse populations remain.
