Chicago dispatch reports Governor Stubbs and other Kansas Republicans debate Theodore Roosevelt’s nomination while Taft loyalists push claims of contested delegations. Roosevelters linger in Chicago awaiting Friday night events as national committee decisions loom.
June 12 dispatch reports William Flinn of Pittsburgh and Roosevelt leaders plan to bolt if Taft is nominated. West Virginia Governor Glasscock backs Roosevelt electors. They argue southern and insular delegates could force a Roosevelt victory in the electoral college to protect Republican states, potentially costing a Taft win nationally.
Captain Stover notes surveys are being prepared by settlers, with Kyle and the Surveyor General in the federal building. Multiple survey parties, led by Criuligue and Reppert, prepare to compel extensive field work in the Carson Link country, aiming to map Gownehibs and other areas, as trains and gear are readied for March.

Charles T. Short of this city opens a general store at Wardsward, Ins for the dome. When Wadsworth was flown, Mr. Short declined a part with his holdings there and they are visible again. Barn.
J. Read former city resident killed Monday night near Clio when driver’s steering failed. Read crushed under the car after it plunged down the embankment. Joe Clark unhurt. Read’s body to be moved to 416 Mill Street. coroner’s inquest held. funeral plans to follow.
Construction on the Fernley Lassen branch of the Simch eaca Pacific is moving quickly. In the next fifteen to twenty days river bridges should be restored to their previous piers, now reinforced. Contractors use the Darby spur to work on the north river bank, while Southern Pacific maintains four camps along the double tracking from Laughton toward between Roca and Truckee as crews grow.
George Fleissa, shot at the Terrel named camp, sat up today for the first time since the incident. Dr. Hiteh reports 115 pellets removed, with 69 or 7 more believed embedded. Pellets lodged in the liver and bowels, but those areas appear to be healing.

Joe Gregg a miner was arrested on a complaint by Carl Carlstein proprietor of the Washoe lunch counter charging him with assault. Gregg appeared in court this afternoon and Carlstein testified Gregg ordered breakfast and then threw a knife and sugar bowl after which three rocks were thrown at him and a gun threatened. Judge Davis postponed the case for an indefinite period on Gregg’s promise to behave. Hugo Wolland testified in a separate matter charging F Branigan with assault and battery. Branigan to be arrested this afternoon.
London June 12 the congress of chambers of commerce of the British empire backed the Toronto board of trade proposal for preferential trade within the empire by 122 to 9 with 48 abstentions. A second resolution urged trade reciprocity and a closer political union among the British West Indies Canada and Newfoundland in light of the nearing completion of the Panama Canal. The next congress is set for Toronto in 1915.

The committee also weighs contests in third to fifth Louisiana districts amid fiery exchanges involving Francis Heney and Governor Johnson over Roosevelt support. Senator Borah denounces the process as harming Republican leadership. Alaska’s Shackleford accuses Heney of graft tactics. Tawney warns against district_OVER state-based precedent.
Five delegates and alternates to the Chicago convention departed on No. 2 last evening along with most of the congressional party except three. Senator Newlands and Representative Bowman headed to San Francisco while Representative Baker made a quick trip to Alturas. In town, Carl Martin recovering from an appendectomy at Harvard Law School was listed as improving after several days’ illness.
Details of the eruption of Katmai volcano on the Alaska peninsula and nearby islands Kodiak Afognak and Raspberry describe widespread damage to fishing villages and possible loss of life. Kodiak reports no confirmed fatalities while relief efforts move to aid stricken towns with Captain Berry directing aid from the Manning. Calls for relief funds go out in Cordova and Seward as the transport Sheridan is urged to Kodiak with provisions.
