British headquarters in France report a new Belgian drive yields 6000 prisoners since yesterday with many more expected. Guns captured largely intact as German counterattacks are repelled. front held across the 6000 yard attack. News from London notes immense bombardment and a tremendous explosion at Messines.
London reports five American survivors from the steamer Southland including A McCoy of Los Angeles. International Mercantile Marine Company says no disaster advices. Southland left a British port May 20. French survivors of Jeane Cordonnier describe torpedoing and sinking in the English Channel May 31.
Paris June. An additional flotilla of American destroyers and patrol boats to cooperate with French forces in the English Channel and the Atlantic is expected shortly, according to the Matin. Naval bases have been prepared to accommodate the American ships.
A bottle washed ashore at the Orkney Islands contains crew messages from the American steamship Frederick. The dated entry January 27, 1916 mentions sinking at sea and that writers, two Americans and five Spaniards, are dying, but provides no details on the loss.
Petrograd reports another official newspaper piece in London detailing a letter from Arthur Henderson Albert Thomas and Emile Vandervelde. The letter questions a conference call by the delegates to end the war before UK French and Belgian talks conclude. Delegates’ executives invite the writers to meet and discuss the situation.
London report questions the earlier claim that Col Winston Spencer Churchill was appointed chairman of the British air board. The Post denies the appointment, The Times doubts it, and says a change may still come soon. Lord Cowdray’s resignation is not confirmed.
Washington dispatch reports that Bustic and Clark were discharged by memorandum from Chairman Denman of the Shipping Board amid a controversy over wooden ship contracts. Gen Goethals was expected to state his position as to whether to pursue wooden vessels, while Denman said the board did not insist on steel or wooden ships.
Twenty four Finnish residents of Riverside a lumber town near Missoula were arrested by the sheriff and deputies with soldiers. They were brought to the county clerk’s office to register and then released.
London June 8 The British keep up vigorous aerial operations over Belgium and have put three German airplanes out of action near Dixmude.
Copenhagen dispatch reports German grain reserves dwindling due to bread allowances replacing potatoes. Berlin conference granted Germany extra proportions from Romanian stocks amid food shortages. Officials anticipate harvest relief but warn fertilizer shortages may yield only a medium crop. fruit harvest also expected medium.
A stirring welcome for American forces at the port featured a Royal Welsh Fusiliers guard of honor and a band as Gen Pershing and his aides arrived. Pershing told the Associated Press the trip had been delightful, praising the latter stages through danger.

A volcanic eruption was also noted with fires spreading through the destroyed zones. Washington reported late night dispatches confirming extensive damage and fires under control in parts of the city.
