Ely man charged with white slavery in dance hall case

Tom O Neil longtime Ely resident and former saloon keeper arrested on charge of white slavery. He ran a dance hall in the restricted district and allegedly helped a woman travel from Utah to Ely to work there. The case stems from a quarrel among district dance hall operators and a smallpox quarantine. The woman’s name is not public.

Judge LN French of Fallon arrives in Rens tomorrow and will next week hear the case of Sherrie C P Ferrer vs Washoe county over $20,000 in license collection fees. Battle over radium claim on Negrit Island near Mono Lake

Three men were wounded in a near hour long battle for a radium claim on Negrit Island at Mono Lake. The land was located by Mrs. C M Wilson, with English capitalists and Standard Oil interest involved. 8 Nevada men led by Diamondfield Hogan seized the site amid gun cotton and a gatling gun defense.

Bride to be shoots herself in Tonopah

Special to The Gazette. In Tonopah on Thursday Bessie Garvey a young woman prepared to travel to Bishop California for her wedding to Frank Courtney accidentally shot herself in the side while packing. She was taken to the county hospital and is expected to recover.

Found Dead in Jail Cell In Virginia City

Virginia City June 8 Arrested Thursday night on a charge of being drunk and disorderly Dava Williams a young miner of this city was jailed and found dead on the floor of the cell yesterday. Death was due to acute alcoholism. He was 32 a native of West Jordan Utah and leaves relatives at Alameda California.

Pure Food Law Enforcement In Nevada Intensified

Commissioners Daemora and Ross under the pure food law pledge strict action against violators. They warned all to obey the law, announced two Lovelock complaints last month, one guilty plea for adulterated milk, a June 17 trial for another, and notices to fifteen violators statewide. Nixon Funeral Planned After Death of Senator George S Nixon

The body of United States Senator George S Nixon will lie in state at his home in Nevada Tuesday afternoon with a private service at 10 AM and a public service on the lawn. A cortege will proceed to the Masonic cemetery after the services. The funeral party includes senators and Nixon’s secretary Dwight Jones. Mrs Nixon returned from Cheyenne after learning of his death. Public offices will close during the funeral to honor the late senator. The life of Nixon is reviewed in a memorial pamphlet noting his rise from telegraph operator to bank owner and his public service to Nevada and the United States.
