Special to the Gazette from Portiana Oregon June 7 reports preliminary returns from 25 of 32 counties indicating strong Republican gains over 1896. Geer leads for Governor by about 10 000, Moody for Congress by about 6 000, Tongue re-elected to Congress by over 2 000, and the Legislature heavily Republican with 23 Republicans to 0 opposition in the Senate and 44 Republicans to 16 opposition in the House. In Portland Geer leads 2 280 to 1 014 with Mason elected mayor by roughly 1 500. Times of Cuba include Havana fortifications under full work and insurgent defeats near Palisade with teens dead. Spanish losses reported heavy with native defections noted.
