Nevada county levies library tax under state statute

Attorney Pike filed an opinion with the Board of County Commissioners describing the Nevada library tax levy statute. It states when a majority of taxpayers sign and a district judge certifies, the board must levy ten cents per one hundred dollars of property value to create a library fund. The document concludes all statutory conditions are met and the board should impose the tax.

Elko Nev June 3 John Mahugh Read former Indian Agent at the Shoshone Reservation died here this morning from injuries suffered in a fall last Thursday. He was a native of Pennsylvania aged seventy three years.

Death of Ed. T. Dupuis Noted Reno Lawyer at Age About Thirty

Word from Cargons reveals the death of Ed. T. Dupuis, a prominent young Reno lawyer. He suffered hemorrhages of the lungs Saturday night, hung between life and death, briefly rallied, then declined and died this morning. He was about thirty and well known in Reno.

Oregon Election Returns in Portland Mayor and Governor

Portland precincts show Williams Republican mayor 2165 to 1770 for Inman Democrat, with a projected majority over 1000. Governor race Chamberlain Democrat leads Furth Republican 1872 to 1007 in the city. Statewide returns from 26 of 33 counties suggest Chamberlain near 2000 statewide majority as counts continue roll in.

Tornado Devastates Louisbourg Area. Farmer Killed

A Wisconsin tornado struck Louisbourg near Platteville last evening destroying barns outbuildings and fences. Edward Ward a prominent farmer was killed. Heavy rain damaged crops and threatened the season’s work on many farms. At Jamestown the Sisson dwelling was destroyed but no injuries are reported.

Mayberry v. Boyd case dismissed for exclusive jurisdiction

The Justice Court threw out the case of Mayberry versus Boyd ex ux of the Meyers estate on grounds that the District Court holds exclusive jurisdiction in estate settlements. Wren and Julien represented the winner.

Trial Land Grabbing Case Ends in Acquittal

In San Francisco on June 3 the United States district court halted the Sierra and Piomae land grabbing prosecutions after the indictment was found to misstate an act. Judge DeHaven directed acquittal as First Assistant U.S. Attorney Banning announced no case remained. Defendants included J. M. Page, William S. Lewis, A. W. Keddie, A. Parsons, and Julian B. Pardee.
