A New York dispatch reports the U S fleet renewed its attack on Santiago de Cuba this morning from Port au Prince Haiti. Rumors say 3000 insurgents may threaten the land side as rebels attack the city in three columns, with a bloody fight ongoing.
From Jamaica and Key West reports detail Commodore Schley's forces led by the Massachusetts New Orleans Iowa and Vixen engaging the Spanish fleet under Admiral Cervera near Santiago de Cuba. The action features the Cristobal Colon and batteries on Morro hill as ships maneuver at sea and shore.
Advices from Port Antonio report the Navy Department sending the Oregon, the armored cruiser New York, another cruiser and two colliers to Santiago de Cuba to reinforce Commodore Schley. Meanwhile Leyden scouts the Cuban coast near Cardenas and encounters no Spanish vessels, while U.S. War Department requests 52.88 million dollars for equipment and maintenance of 75,000 volunteers. No troop movements from Cuba are expected soon due to Cerra’s fleet and risks to transports.
