Lightning Kills Boy and Animal Near Elko

From Island Mountain reporter Penrod we learn of the lightning death of 11 year old Andrew Johnson, stepson of L West, on May 24 near the Humboldt North Fork ranch. The boy rode with a mare and colt to find horses when a thunderstorm struck. his dog survived albeit missing an eye. The bodies were found two miles from the ranch after a days search. The mare and colt were also killed by the same bolt. The dog remained with the bodies for three days. Burial followed Tuesday.

Strange tumor removed from hen for Sunday pie

Phil Reese selected a fat hen believed to be unproductive for a chicken pot pie. The carcass weighed far more than expected and doctors diagnosed an ovarian tumor containing a thousand translucent sacs with albumen. The mass, exhibited at Pinniger & Queen's drug store, will be preserved for study.

Loyal streetcar dog patrols H street route

The Record Union reports a shepherd dog followed cars on the H street route for days. He inspected occupants at Tenth and E, then returned to headquarters at Tenth and K Streets with the first car. He ignored blue cars, rode the red car at night, and waits to reunite with his missing master.

Immigrant Miner Finds Ledge Then Heads West

An immigrant named Anton Brun, 21, who landed in Reno a year ago, moved to Greenville in Plumas County seeking work. He prospected a quartz ledge, sunk a shaft, and developed a mineralized vein. He recently sold his prospect for $2,000 and now travels to San Francisco. He plans a return trip with $50 spent, keeping the rest in cash.
