A July 1888 notice laments disruptive behavior by local youths in Reno. It condemns groups of five to ten lads who jeer at passing ladies, engage in loud sparring near sidewalks, and shout after acquaintances. The letter warns of potential violence if the conduct continues.
The Paso del Norte court progress on Cutting shows mainly prosecutorial paper review and a possible year or two penalty. Mexican state rights extremism worries border citizens as US apathy draws comment. Also notes on Reno anti Chinese move, Hearst study office request, Stewart speech on mass education, and a margarine bill fate.
In Sacramento on July 30 about twenty five Republican Assembly members held a secret caucus to name a rival to Speaker Parks. After several ballots Henry Edgerton of Sacramento was chosen. Participants said they were not bound to vote for Edgerton but aimed to defeat Parks in the general caucus. In San Francisco on July 31 the Iron Moulders Union withdrew from the Federation of Trades citing dissatisfaction with rules and regulatives.
A Philadelphia bound pleasure yacht Sarah Craig capsized near the Government dock at Sandy Hook during a storm. Six ladies and one man drowned, seven party members saved. Names of the deceased include Mrs. T. H. Stevens and her daughters Miss M. Stevens and Miss Aiken, plus Miss Emma and Miss Beagie Merritt, Miss Maud Rittean, and Chester Clark. Saved: Z. W. Jordan, Alfred Potter, Frank Woodall, W. S. Buckley, Captain Ed. Rutland, Mate Charles Ferguson, L. Bowman, Samuel Jones, William Parrish. Bodies being recovered. Further reports of a New York cigar makers strike and political/news items follow.
Foreign Dispatches report Ottawa minister Fowler spent his maritime province visit investigating the Bay of Fundy fisheries. Measures will be enacted to tighten border water laws with New Brunswick and Maine. Mackerel are plentiful, US schooners avoid cruisers, bait purchases halted, and no crab transshipments allowed. Shoe factory Stead Simpson & Co Leicester burned in Londons.
