Seventy five travelers many women arrive in Reno at 9 30 am on train No 19 delayed by Wyoming snow and fierce winds. Passengers describe weeklong confinement on a stranded through train from eastern points via Laramie and Rock River.

At a farm near Kankakee Illinois on January 29 a pancake mix prepared by Mrs. Q O Meints is believed to have contained arsenic. The mistaken preparation killed five members of the Meints family, four of whom were Mrs Meints' children and the fifth her grandchild. The mother reportedly thought she was using pancake flour.

Prof Jones said the epicenter could be within 300 miles of Rome and possibly offshore. The quake’s severity appeared high with a long duration. The imprecise location leaves Alaska as the most likely source.

New York January 30 Peter Maher once a celebrated heavyweight is an inmate at Bellevue hospital and physicians say he is suffering from a complete physical break down at age forty seven. He has not boxed in years and his last major bout ended with a knockout by Bob Fitzsimmons in under one round.
Rome Jan 8 The Austrian destroyer Siluszar was put out of action in an Adriatic naval engagement. Two Italian destroyers engaged an Austrian flotilla and the Flustar was hit, set on fire and towed to a nearby port by torpedo boats. The Italians suffered no loss. The fight occurred amid a tempest.
Detroit Journal, an afternoon paper, is announced sold to new owners N. C. Wright and Hy. Bleck of New York with Vernam and Paul Bleck named in the deal. Purchase price not disclosed. Publisher D. Starr says no change in the paper’s politics.

The message may go through the American or German embassies. Officials note merchant ships armed for defense have attacked German submarines, while Britain and its allies weigh heavier armament, risking clashes with submarines as naval operations resume.
William Luther aged 86, longtime Missouri River man and one of the builders of the Sioux City Covington pontoon bridge, died at his South Sioux City home from senility in the early hours. He arrived in Sioux City in the late 1860s and was among the last surviving river workers from that era.
