An 19th century account describes how polar bears stalk seals on breaking ice, using stealthy creeping approaches and quick bursts to strike from the edge of holes. It notes bears sometimes dive to pursue seals, and mentions walrus interactions and a claim of tossing stones or ice to stun prey, attributed to Lieut. Schwatka.
A Western agent, visiting Boston for the wedding of a wealthy merchant’s daughter, shies away from the fare, declining food then tasting a croquette and exclaiming it “Gogh! Hash!” The host’s concern and the guest’s fuss highlight cultural contrasts in a social scene.
In DeKalb County Tennessee locals collect mussels from the Caney Fork River during low water. Dozens of men work the riverbed to harvest specimens valued at times, including a specimen once said to have sold for 900 dollars in New York near Smithville. The activity is described as the leading enterprise in the area.
D R Lowell of the Ish Irove Methodist Church reads a paper in Hudson Avenue Methodist Church noting varied marriage cases. He cites Irish and colored couples, drunken grooms, and wedding fees ranging from one to twenty dollars with some paid as tips or never at all.
George warns in extremely hot weather that two or three dishes of ice cream might prove fatal. Ulara replies she would consider it a happy bath to die, showing chilling fatalism in the scene.
Journal: A Nevada Washoe County sale of lands in Franktown set for January 20, 1886, to satisfy a decree for 5501 plus interest and costs. Trustees of Virginia Teresa Corresco present the property description including 73 and 285.1 acres bounded by E B Towle and the V and T railroad. Sheriff J. S. Emmitt notes sale in Reno at the courthouse steps between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. with payment in gold coin.
The District Court of Nevada Seventh Judicial District orders kin and interested parties in the estate of Myron Charles Lake to appear February 16 at 10:00 a.m. in Reno to show cause why sale of ward wardship real estate should be granted. The order will be published weekly for four weeks prior to hearing. Judge W. I. Boardman signs.
