A vivid account from Cassell's Magazine recounts an eclipse witnessed near Sohaeg Egypt. Spectators protected by tents observed a 70 second totality with a violet dusk, a comet-like speck near the corona, and frenzied birds and crowds. after, praise to Allah mixed with shared astonishment.
A New York bag maker recalls the first sail-loft origins, two firms resisting the pool, and a surge in sack production aided by grain exports and sewing machines. Coffee sacks rarely return, as each is redone upon arrival, with two or three million shipped annually. Also noted are ant recognition across years and a note on greyhounds as a vitality booster.
A St Louis Republican reminiscence from March 1865 recounts life in Mobile on official business, detailing dinners, meals, and etiquette for Confederate soldiers. It notes corn bread and bacon as staples, scarce biscuits for wealthier families, a hotel meal costing five dollars, and humorous anecdotes about shoes and biscuit scarcity.
Bellows Falls astronomer D M Blake says a star appearing in 45 AD and 1264 and 1572 reappeared last winter and, after sweeping the sky, he found a new object in Andromeda on August 27. He argues this is the Star of Bethlehem and predicts it will brighten to rival Jupiter within a year and fade for 314 more years.
Monday morning a Benjamin Haupt stable horse was found with its mouth open and a horseshoe in the mouth stand. The shoe had been on the hoof the previous evening and was torn free while the horse tried to extract it. The horse was taken to J B Zimmerman's blacksmith shop for shoeing. Also notes advise bending cabbages to break roots to prevent bursting before market. An international potato show in London featured new dark-skinned varieties and few white skins.
