Twenty Die As Battle Rages On Venezuelan Coast

Reports from Trinidad say 20 Venezuelan coast guards and crew members aboard a gunboat were killed in a four hour fight near Macuro against partisans of former President Castres and supporters of Juan Vicente Gómez. The gunboat Miranda withdrew to coal at Park of Spal, then returned. hundreds of troops assembled at Macuro as fighting continued with repeated landings planned and a lingering engagement.

Fire destroys eight Silver City businesses in Idaho camp

Eight business establishments in Silver City Idaho's leading mining camp were ruined by a fire started in a Chinese restaurant and spread rapidly. The blaze caused about 40008 dollars in losses with little insurance, and dynamite blasts saved the War Eagle hotel and several key buildings. Hundreds of miners fought to save property amid chaotic scenes.

Mystery in Death of an Old Man in Colorado Springs

Charles P. Essick, aged clerk of Pikes Peak Camp No. 5 Woodmen of the World, was found dead in bed in Colorado Springs. Initial reports cited confinement of his son Charles Essick, jailed for the murder of Funk Scott, as a possible motive. Later hints suggested possible homicide. Essick leaves two widows.

A bold burglar girl tried to enter George M Donohue’s South Street home. Donohue fired from the bathroom door and again when the burglar climbed the fence. He believes he hit her, though if wounded it was slight, and she fled unseen.

Peggy Carson Defies Law In Grand Jury Absence

Sheriff Ferrer pursued Indian woman Peggy Carson to compel testimony in a case against William Lynch for whisky selling to Indians. Peggy refused to appear, sending word through Billy Wheeler she cared not whether jailed six months or a year. She complained of meals at Wheeler ranch and invited the sheriff and judge to visit realms never seen.

St Louis December 29 David F Maloney a wealthy businessman and club figure killed himself here as fire at his suburban home gutted the property last Sunday. He had been arrested on a charge by his father in law real estate dealer F E Niesen and was to stand trial January 6.
