Goldfield Mill Starts Up and Florence Mill Trial Cleared

Goldfield Consolidated unit with 600 tons per day capacity began operations at Goldfield today, full discharge by noon, and the Florence mill was tested yesterday and found in perfect running order. In Washington, a White House statement says the president cannot intervene in the Gompers Mitchell Morrison cases while appeals are pending. decisions rest with the courts and any pardon or commutation would await completion of the legal process. The president has instructed the Justice Department to stay informed on progress to act if justified.

Western Pacific rails reach Elko in Nevada

Special to the Gazette Elko Nevada December 25 the first rails of the Western Pacific railroad from Ogden to California were laid in Elko this week and the last rails were laid in the city on Thursday Division Engineer T J Wycha is in Elko supervising the work and arranging for material for Western Pacific buildings.

Moran Pleased With New Copper Mines Near Brunswick

District Attorney Moran toured the copper mines near the old Brunswick in Ormsby County about fifty miles from the city. He reported Eastern investors have taken over the Brunswick mill and plan a large Merrimac smelter. Ten men currently work on the property and Moran praised its promising showings.

The visit of railroad superintendent H W Sheridan and officials in Reno led to commitments for street crossing upgrades and curb replacements. City and county leaders discussed granite curbing, cement curb, wider crossings, clearance posts, and shared funding for a new county road from Reno to Laugh tons to ease dangerous crossings. The Southern Pacific plans double tracking Reno to Laugh tons but denies Reno to Truckee expansion.

Uprising Clash Ends With Barricaded Villa Siege

In Moscow a secret police chief Baron Cotte was killed and Colonel Muraki wounded in a battle with revolutionists entrenched in a suburban villa. Police and troops exchanged fire, artillery bombarded the villa, and several policemen and soldiers were killed or wounded before the revolutionaries were subdued. The fighting occurred at Elk Island near Moscow, a noted summer resort.

Noted actor to attend divorce hearing January 4

Conway Tearle, star of the Ben Hur company, will be in Judge Pike's court January 4 to seek a divorce from Gertrude Tearle. Tearle, represented by W H Schnitzer, had permission to leave San Francisco for the hearing. The couple married in Sunderland England in 1901. the wife now resides in London. The demurrer by her lawyers was overruled. the case is by default with no children or property details noted.

Claus Spreckels the Sugar King Dies in San Francisco

Claus Spreckels known as the Sugar King of the Pacific coast died at 4:30 today at his San Francisco home in his ninety something year. Pneumonia developed from a cold. family and friends were at his bedside as physicians warned the end neared. Rudolph Spreckels and John D. Spreckels were among relatives, with others including Mrs. Charry Holbrook and Mrs. Alexander Hambert. The prominent entrepreneur built the Bay Sugar refinery and expanded refineries, investments, and the Oceanic Steamship Co. He arrived in the United States in 1846 after leaving Germany, later establishing a major sugar and shipping empire with extensive California and Hawaii interests.
