Cable Ship Silvertown Arrives at Oshu For Splice

A San Francisco cable dispatch reports the Silvertown cable ship near the Island of Oshu in 460 fathoms of water. About 2239 nautical miles of cable laid. the shore end will be spiked to the sea cable near Diamond Head. Weather may delay final splice and Honolulu connection to San Francisco.

Grant Will Publicized. Mementos to New York Museum

The will of Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant filed in Washington on December 20 estimates four equal shares for heirs. A Japanese memento aged a thousand years is left to the Museum of Arts in New York. Executor named by three sons. estate details include house at 211 Magothy Avenue and securities totaling about 150000, with provisions for family support and education.

Bitter Winter Widens Its Cold Grip Across Midwest

December 26 reports from Lincoln Des Moines Sioux City Louisville St Paul Chicago and other cities describe a severe cold wave. Temperatures range from eight below in Lincoln to nineteen below in St Paul and single digits elsewhere with wind calm but frigid conditions persist across the region. Authorities note fuel shortages and widespread discomfort as the coldest weather of the season continues.

Buried Beneath Wreckage in Colorado Coal Train

Fourteen coal miners were pulled from a wreck north of Trinidad and died soon after. A struck car contained about twenty five to thirty men who were en route to Trinidad for Christmas. The death toll rises as rescue teams continue to search the wreckage under tons of debris.

Striking Shopmen Seek Settlement On Western Lines

Representatives of about three hundred striking shopmen on the Union Pacific and related lines seek a settlement as the strike enters its sixth month. They press for discharge of strike breakers and reestablishment of statements. The dispute stems from demands for higher wages and opposition to piece work amid a power outage and cold weather. Negotiations involve J. Kitchell and H. Harriman, with President Burt seeking time for talks in New York.

The Lucky Numbers Draw at Reno Department Store

A large crowd gathered as tickets were drawn for the Dolls and Automotic prizes. J C Leopold and C M Davenport mixed up the numbers and Dorothy Darling, blindfolded, drew five tickets: 7386 for the Dolls and 7379 for the Automobile, asking holders to present them promptly.

Pneumonia Victim Mr. B. T. Wallace Dies in Reno

Benjamin Wallace of Denver Colorado died at Reno General Hospital after a short illness from pneumonia aged forty seven. A Nova Scotia native he had lived in Colorado thirty years and came to Reno seeking business prospects leaving behind a wife and an eight year old son. Undertakers Perking and Oliver took charge and his remains will be shipped to Denver accompanied by two old friends Snyder and Gregory.

Shortage of Stock Cars Hits Southern Pacific Orders

Demand at the Southern Pacific freight office seeks twenty six cattle cars for local shipments. The company has agreed to furnish them but they have not appeared and are not expected before tomorrow. Also noted is the case of John M Mullins charged with murder and assault in the Beckwith area, with a January 19 setting in Quincy California.
