Attorney General Daugherty ordered a nationwide investigation into retail prices for food fuel shoes and clothing. He accused retailer organizations of keeping prices high and said investigators would collect current retail and wholesale price data to compare and push prices toward a proper level while coordinating with states.
In New York on December 2, hundreds of homeless awoke in municipal lodging houses and Salvation Army shelters as a northwest gale drove the cold to near nine degrees below zero. About 1200 people spent the night, including twenty four women and three children. Relief is limited with warmer weather expected tomorrow and a possible Christmas snow.
In Omaha two women linked to meatpacking strike activity faced a police judge and were sentenced to fifteen days in jail for pepper throwing that struck a officer and for brick tossing at workers. They gained release on appeal as a crowd later attacked the jail and police dispersed the rioters.
Chicago December 22 The city council cost committee will probe the cranberry market corner after Russell J Poole secretary of the committee reported prices for cranberry barrels used in turkey sauce surged from 3.97 in 1914 to 33 today. Last September prices stood at 12 per barrel.
Washington December 22. Legislation to finance soldier bonus from taxes on beer and light wines is ruled out by Representative Mondell Republican leader of the house. He said such a tax is out of the question early or late by this congress.
Mont Berg, sought by California authorities over a Loyalton bank shortage, was indicted by the county grand jury on a bribery charge rather than being extradited. Plumas County Sheriff A. Braden, in Texas with extradition papers, telegraphed California’s attorney general for guidance. Berg is accused of attempting to bribe an officer at his arrest.
An explosion at a small frame structure near the state highway building in Phoenix triggers a probe into an IWW shipment and 27 alarm clocks allegedly prepared to trigger the blast. Officials say no sufficient explosive was stored on highway property and no powder was found in the building, with Thomas Maddock and Adjt. Gen. Ingalls confirming no stored explosives.
Count Armand M D Aleria and his wife Kate Nixon widow of Senator George Nixon Nevada must pay 12000 damages to Charles and Mrs Shirey in a U S district court verdict. The Shireys claimed the couple caused a car crash that injured Mrs Shirey who sought 19000. Shirey also claimed 2000 for the loss of his wife's services.
Washington date reports liquor withdrawals from bond cut domestic supply by fifty percent as enforcement agents strengthen anti smuggling across borders. Prohibition Commissioner Gaynes praised the season’s constructive enforcement and extended holiday greetings to agents and states. Senate confirms Elmer Dover of Tacoma as assistant secretary of the treasury.

Sedalia Missouri December 22 Mrs Sophia Junge received 500 damages from Otto Phel and Frederieck Kueck by a circuit court jury for selling intoxicating liquor to her husband in violation of the prohibition law.
Chicago, December 22. Police Chief Fitzmorris warned the city will be exceptionally dry for New Year's Eve. Special raiding squads with fast cars will inspect clubs and dives for liquor, and hotels were warned to bar liquor or risk arrest under strict prohibition enforcement.
Des Moines report says Private George W. Bonnet of the US Marine Corps traveling to see his mother Mrs Fay Gilbert was in a plane smashup near Omaha shortly after noon today. The aircraft was wrecked but Bonnet, a local newspaper reporter, and the pilot escaped injury.
Elko Gazette reports mail pilot P. P. Scott on the Elko Salt Lake City route is lost after departing Elko at 6 30 this morning. He was last seen near Shafter after passing Woodhouse ranch in Ruby Valley with only enough fuel for about an hour. Several planes are searching the area.
In Constantinople the Turkish national assembly debated a motion to depose the sultan on high treason charges. Mustapha Kemal Pasha opposed the move, stating all differences with the Constantinople government would be settled after hostilities end.
Peter Ekteinow confessed murderer of his former sweetheart Miss Cecil Kerstein was sentenced to life imprisonment by District Judge Taylor at Fort Madison penitentiary. The case followed his December confession and the jury’s earlier findings.
Washington December 22 The Interstate Commerce Commission disallowed Ford’s proposed freight rate cut on coal shipments along the Ford railroad from Detroit Toledo and Trenton to Toledo Detroit and other cities finding the reduction discriminatory. The ruling blocks a planned twenty percent cut across mining territory and coal products and states the commission’s decision was based on grounds that the measure would not aid balanced transportation needs.
Col. Henry Watterson, famed Louisville Courier Journal publisher and veteran journalist, died in a Jacksonville hotel at 6 15 am after a winter visit to Florida. Heart failure, with lung congestion, ended his long illness as family at bedside. He had spent winters in Florida for years, usually at Fort Myers, and his death follows a brief period of illness during this year’s trip.
Police and firemen at daybreak renewed their search of the Wright Woman's Furnishing store ruins after a gas explosion late yesterday. More than thirty seven injured, including two women who died later, with reports that two additional women are missing from Weir homes. Explosive gas from a leaky main seeped into the basement, contacting fire in a furnace.
