Allied troops abandon Hamhung as Chinese forces press a sea coast push. Demolitions blaze the city as refugees flood toward Hungnam while U S and allied units form a defensive ring and heavy naval and air support shells Chinese divisions massing on the coast.
SELLECK Washington December 16 Miner John Wolti survived 54 hours trapped 400 feet underground after Big 4 coal mine collapse. Rescuers pulled him out at 7 20 p m 10 20 p m EST with arm crushed and face grimy. He showed shock yet appears recovering under care of Dr Gordon Adams.
Republicans urge President Truman to fire Secretary of State Acheson, calling his removal an invitation to Stalin. In the Senate, a GOP policy statement backed by Taft was approved in conference. Separately, the Senate Finance Committee discussed raising corporate tax rates to offset house excess profits tax cuts and set a 60 percent cap on total tax burden. Some drought aid to Yugoslavia and civil defense measures also advanced.
Washington dispatch reports a clash between Senator McCarthy and columnist Drew Pearson over communism. McCarthy brands Pearson a Moscow directed character assassin, while Pearson vows to sue and notes his anti communist record. Washington December 16 UPI Cash-ins of series E bonds look set to exceed purchases for the first time since 1941 as part of the war drive. Treasury data show cash-ins totaling 3.284 billion for 1950 through December, running 178 billion dollars above purchases.

A broken air line caused the stoppage and workers were overcome by diesel fumes, according to A. Durant, assistant railroad superintendent at Green River.
Washington Dec 16 The government froze new car prices at Dec 1 1950 levels. Price increases by Ford GM Chrysler Nash are rolled back five percent on 1951 models. The order by the Economic Stabilization Agency lasts until March 1 and suspends all price increases pending a labor cost study. It is the first price ceiling since the 1946 OPA demise. Further action on stabilization is anticipated.
Red China denounces UN cease fire moves as a trap to control Korea fighting while offering to advise Chinese volunteers to end the hostilities quickly. Ambassador Wu Hsiu Chuan says Beijing may still support a peaceful settlement and urges restraint from U.S. actions.
A tri state committee to draft an interstate mutual aid compact was urged by civilian defense directors of Washington Oregon and California. Governors of the three Pacific coast states were asked to set up such a committee during sessions of the Pacific coast board of intergovernmental relations in San Francisco. The plan envisions eventual representation from all states in the sixth army area Hawaii Alaska and neighboring Canada and Mexico.
