New York December 2 The price of bar silver fell to 47.78 cents per ounce the lowest in years as demand weakens at home and abroad Industrial depression reduced domestic demand India’s market is unsettled by a revolutionary movement while China has bought steadily for months A further decline was quoted at 47.53 cents per ounce.
In San Francisco Chief Biggs drowned after his body remained unrecovered as police continued the search started yesterday. He offered to resign to Police Commissioner Huge D Keil an hour before his death, hoping to ease newspaper criticism. Keil refused to accept the resignation or discuss it further.
In Chafey Nevada at 4 am the first murder in the mining camp occurred as Mrs. Tena Coby a colored laundress killed John Manley, also colored, with an axe, nearly severing his head after a dispute over laundry money. Manley reportedly did not return 60 cents.
Berlin December 2. The United States and Germany agreed to a two cent postage rate for letters between the two nations replacing the five cent rate. The new rate takes effect January 1.
Mrs JoC Wardell wife of General Wardell died this morning in the county hospital from leprosy. The case drew great local notice as her husband cared for her through illness after returning from exile to Tombstone. General Wardell died of cancer soon after and authorities failed to act further on the matter.
Three men believed to be professionals robbed the First National Bank vault in Pepplalll. Explosions and forced entry left gold and coins scattered while a pursuing resident fired at the intruders. A passenger later tied to a railway car met with county authorities in Los Angeles. General Wardell, Civil and Mexican War veteran, noted as an intrepid soldier.
Rumors say Davis seeks legal action against Curtis Publishing and James Hopper over a Post story about Dumont Tul and Diamondfield. Witnesses describe Davis vowing forceful retaliation and court action to protect reputation, while friends fear violence if Hopper is found.
