In the first trial race at Bateman's Point Rhode Island on August 21 the Columbia defender beat the Constitution aspirant over a fifteen mile course. The Columbia led by about two minutes at the windward mark and finished roughly four minutes ahead, a net edge of about four minutes and thirty seconds after subtracting the start lead.
A sensational update from Missouri reports the killing of Mrs. Mary Henderson in Columbus. Bloodhounds failed to trace Baseie Francis as mobs believe white accomplices aided his escape. Posse members refuse further pursuit amid hints of vendetta and alleged shout for brutal questioning.
The Kindergartens Association and School Trustees met in Salt Lake City and formally handed the new Babcock Memorial kindergarten building to the school board. The trustees accepted it for kindergarten use, with public school authorities directing teaching. The Carnegie Company mills at Duquesne operated this morning despite last night’s report of a possible 6 am closure. A union-led walkout by Open Hearth workers prompted mass layoff threats, with 31 fired and 11 escorted out by police. Police presence rose to 75, while officials predicted continued operation. Beaver Falls tube works will resume Monday under new management.
The Board of County Commissioners will meet Monday September 11 as a Board of Equalization and be in session from that date to October 7 to hear complaints from anyone who believes they have been over assessed.
A Great Northern passenger train No 3 wreck near Nyack Montana on August 31 killed thirty six people and injured thirteen. The collision followed a runaway freight car breaking loose from a freight train on a steep Rocky Mountain grade. Superintendent P T Downs his son Kirk and Henry Blair perished in the private coach. Forty six Scandinavian laborers perished in the fire and debris with only thirteen survivors. In a second account at Essex Montana eighteen cars rolled down to Niack Station and collided with No 3. Downs and about twenty five laborers were killed. most of the bodies burned. Regular passengers escaped unharmed.
Philadelphia August 31 two more bodies recovered from the Delaware of women raising total dead to thirteen and missing to fifteen. Amanda Cross of Philadelphia identified among the recovered. A body previously identified as Harry Johnson of Dulmeville was questioned by relatives. Hull clearing continues with hopes of finding more bodies.
