Elgin Aug 24 Joe Thomas auto racer driving Eddie Heaurne's car in practice here this afternoon turned turtle three times on Hairpin turn. Thomas suffered severe cuts on the head and body rushed to local hospital. His mechanician was slightly hurt. injuries not believed serious. Car badly smashed.
Freeport II reports nine year old Richard Snyder of Savanna Illinois in critical condition after two playmates tied him to a cow. He was dragged about a mile before the bovine restraint was released, leaving him severely injured.
The Missouri public service commission authorized railroads to raise intrastate passenger and freight rates to match interstate increases. A fifty percent rise in sleeping car rates was also approved.
Aug 24 Eight persons were injured as a five story East Side tenement fire trapped a crowd. Firemen and police prevented heavier loss of life as flames spread rapidly through the building. GINA Sask Aug 24 Assistant Commissioner Tracey reports riots of rum running along the international line from Estevan Sask to Minot North Dakota. Whiskey smuggling, cars known as whiskey sixes and a gang operated clearing stations, with Estevan thriving on the illicit trade. A chief of police daughter was fined for concealing weapons amid border lawlessness.
William G. McAdoo ex treasury secretary will preside at a luncheon for James M. Cox Democratic presidential nominee in New York next Saturday. McAdoo will also offer a brief address during Gov. Ce.
Lisburn Ireland Aug 24 Loyalists burned and looted nationalist property in retaliation for Police Inspector Swanzeys murder. About seventy premises damaged with losses estimated at £500000 as fires raged past midnight. The town emptied of nationalists amid reprisals and the Union Jack flew on one house. MacSweeney in Cork remained in Brixton jail in critical condition after thirteen days in custody. Nationalist stores looted in Lisburn as tension rose and a boot factory burned creating further sparks of unrest.
Four United States airplanes completing a Mineola New York to Nome Alaska flight landed at Nome. Captain St Clair Street led the expedition and announced the return hop to New York would occur in a few days. Aero Club members praised the epoch making achievement.

Mexico City reported that Rivers legal measures will pursue export duties for March to June. Treasury officials said August 30 deadline was extended due to many companies signaling payment. Meanwhile a rival paper claimed tankers could be detained and shipments seized for delinquent duties.
Washington reports July exports at 654 million dollars and imports at 537 million, widening the monthly trade surplus. For the first seven months, exports total 4.9 billion with a six percent gain, while imports rise seventy eight percent to 3.0 billion. Gold and silver movements are noted, with July gold imports at 1.83 million and exports at 21.87 million, and silver imports at 6.50 million to 5.49 million in July.

James C. Bulger, president of the Colorado Federation of Labor, telegraphed Secretary of War Baker protesting soldiers riding on Denver street cars and aiding strike breakers during a Denver Tramway Company strike. The troopers were stationed on cars after a riot and a car wreck in Englewood suburb. Bulger said the action could provoke public unrest, and he noted War Department acknowledgment that the issue is being reviewed.
