General Orlando Evans Dies at Early Morning

Obituary notes General Orlando Evans pioneer of California and Nevada. Born January 22, 1818 in Washington Ohio, oldest of eleven, survived by Alvaro J. W. Evans A. Evans and Mrs Mary Arrowsmith. He lived in Defiance Ohio, French Corral California, Buckeye Gill Nevada County, later Nevada. He served as Reno postmaster and held local offices. Funeral from J N Evans residence Sunday at 2 p.m.

Dollar Wheat Sparks New York Market Frenzy

Wheat surged across markets Aug 20 as New York and other exchanges reported prices jumping to and beyond a dollar a bushel amid talks of export demand. No. 2 red and No. 2 Pennsylvania futures traded at 101 to 102 in the day’s activity, with near-term contracts hitting 100 and veterans noting one of the station’s most dramatic upticks in years. In Minnesota and Chicago, prices climbed to the dollar level before oscillating, while Portland and San Francisco reports described continued strength and firming tones with limited selling. In other news, indictments were filed in San Jose against Pao Dutcher and Mrs. Schofield for the murder of G. W. Schofield, with an autopsy performed at Oak Hill cemetery and arraignment set for Monday.

Murder at Sea Aboard Olive Pecker

A cable from Buenos Ayres reports a crew of six aboard the three masted schooner Olive Pecker killed the captain and first mate during a Friday night aboard off the South American coast. The six sailors, who faced hard work and insufficient food, fled to Bahia after setting a fire. the culprits John Lend and an unnamed companion were arrested on shore. The six men will be sent to the United States for trial as authorities investigate the tragedy.

Bank closure at Mount Pleasant and Pike Peak murder linked
