More Steel Mills Started At Painter Plant

Pittsburgh August 19 two more mills at the Painter plant went into operation increasing the total. About 200 workers including skilled men are at work. Monessenmay start before night. Strikers deny harm to their cause and intensify vigilance. At Clark mill in the city a ten inch mill was started with a full crew. Amalgamated organizers push membership toward 1000. Mayor Black travels east for justice as labor tensions rise.

Government Naval Work At A Standstill

San Francisco August 19 Work on six naval vessels and one army craft is delayed due to labor troubles. Union Iron Works builds six warships and two submarine destroyers including the battleship Ohio and monitor Wyoming. Torpedo boat destroyers Preble Perry and Paul Jones await completion and trials. The Perry and Preble have undergone tests. The Navy Department ordered speed-improving car alterations, not yet steamed. Logan at Mare Island likely ready within six weeks. no strike at government yard.

Deaths and court ruling mark Reno tale in waning summer

The Gazette reports the death of Charles F. Lange former Lange Smith hardware partner who died in Yerington and was buried in Reno aged sixty five. Court of Inquiry to be held in Gunner's Workshop

The Navy Department will hold the Sehley Court of Inquiry in the Gunner's Workshop at the Navy Yard. Judge Jere Wilson and Isador Rayner met Acting Secretary Hackett about witness lists. Captain Lemley, Judge Advocate, is in Canada and will return next Monday.

Pilot of Islander Talks of Disaster

Victoria August 13 Pilot La Blanc who steered the Islander when she struck Sisko describes a dark windy night and a rapid sinking. He says the boats were launched after passengers crowded the lifeboats and some crew had to swim for wreckage. Forty two persons drowned, with Andrew Keating and his two sons among those who did not escape.

Soldier blown to death at Fort Riley target practice

Fort Riley, August 19. A seven inch artillery shell exploded during target practice under Captain Van Deuzen. Private Watson's head was blown off and Private King, along with other soldiers, sustained severe injuries. Officials suspect a defective fuse caused the accident.

Traffic Opens on Isthmus Says Colombian Minister

Washington August 10. Colombian Minister Dr Silva met with Secretary Hay and reported Isthmus traffic was unobstructed and Colombia can keep it open. He said the US would not intervene unless Colombia requests it or intervention becomes necessary. Also local items: a teen thief named Kia Lewis jailed for pocketing about $8 from Michael Davitt at Arcade Hotel. A California firm leases the former S Emrich store to open a Twentieth Century Store in Reno with J H Gray guiding stock. Also beef and sheep shipments from S F to Western Meat Co. and local mishaps and social notes including a boy breaking his wrist at Lake Tahoe and marriages on the way to the sunset.

Mob surrounds jail over Black suspect in Cassle Wilds death

A mob forms at Pierce City Missouri after the death of Cassle Wilds, found near the woods by Frisco bridge. A Black person is suspected of assaulting her on Sunday return from Sunday school and fatally injuring her throat. The posse hunts the suspect as crowds threaten lynching.
