Dynamite blasts struck the homes of two Negro ministers in Birmingham area. Eighteen residents narrowly escaped harm as shots targeted the attackers’ car. Police, numbering about 49, arrested Horace Moore, 32, on resisting arrest and disorderly charges.
Greek government forces pressed into the Vitz mountain fastness as rebels reportedly fled toward Albania. An army column reached within a mile of a guerrilla supply junction on the Phlorina Kastoria highway while officials said rebels continued to ferry food and ammunition from Albania.
Washington Aug 13 The Association of American Railroads announced a four percent general freight rate increase effective September 1 Notices are prepared for filing with the Interstate Commerce Commission and posting at freight stations nationwide to meet the ICC 15 day publication rule before the increase becomes effective.

Washington August 13 Lawmakers voiced general approval of a plan to barter military supplies with Canada including warships aircraft small arms ammunition and other items in exchange for American equipment Secretary of Defense Johnson reported to President Truman that Canada wants to swap goods to bolster its dollar reserves while gaining needed gear. Supporters said it could help both nations though critics warned about anti submarine vessels and loss of trained personnel. Some senators cautioned unemployment at navy yards and questioned feasibility.
A heavy one hour rain in parts of the Payette National Forest Salmon river area aided crews battling a 5000 acre timber fire. Officials said rain may help little and could not yet measure its impact. Wind-driven spread yesterday had worsened the fire but conditions improved today.
Washington Aug 13 members of the House arms committee clashed over progress in the B 36 probe. Rep Van Zandt said Vinson is white washing and tried to discredit him while another member said no real evidence backs reports about B 36 purchases. The panel recessed to Aug 22 to hear Gen Hap Arnold and plane makers. Vinson predicted at least 30 more days of hearings.
Former President Herbert Hoover, 75, was treated aboard an eastbound train in Ogden Utah for a gall bladder attack. Dr Keath Stratford said the ailment was mild and Hoover would continue to New York. He declined hospitalization and pressed on with his trip aboard the City of San Francisco with private secretary Bernice Miller.
Dr. Dale Hadfield, Elko county doctor, treated former President Herbert Hoover aboard a City of San Francisco train at Elko Nevada. Hoover reported a gall bladder attack and was given emergency care then advised to proceed to Ogden Utah for a medical checkup. He arrived in noticeable pain but improved after routine treatment and rest. The stop occurred at 4 a.m. with a 30 minute layover while the doctor attended Hoover after being alerted at Carlin 35 miles away.
Canton Aug 13 Kanhsien a gateway city to Canton stood firm against 50,000 to 60,000 Communist troops. A Chinese army spokesman said Reds could not crack the defenses as fighting raged on the outskirts 215 miles northeast of Canton. Provincial officials fled Kiangsi capital but Gen Fang Tien directed Kanhsien's defense as governor and armed forces chief.
In Tirana, Albania broadcasts claim Greek land and air assaults on Albanian soil were repulsed yesterday, detailing two attacks on the frontier. The Albanian defense ministry issued the communique confirming the engagements.
President Galo Plaza Lasso reports updated figures from the Aug. 5 quake in Ecuador. He cites more than 6,000 dead, about 280,000 affected, and over 100,000 left homeless. Damaged property pegged at 67.5 million dollars, with estimates revised from 4,000 fatalities.
Atlanta Aug 13 hospital bulletin says Margaret Mitchell author of Gone With The Wind is showing gains after being struck by a car. She briefly woke from a semi coma, asked for water, then noted she was hurt all over before slipping back unconscious.
In Strasbourg on August 13 the council of Europe's assembly rejected Ireland’s bid to debate Irish partition. British delegates opposed the move, while the committee of ministers set an agenda focusing on economic matters, social security, and cultural cooperation.
Walter F. White, 56, executive secretary of the NAACP, says he married July 6 to Poppy Cannon, New York writer and ad woman. The couple, not all Negro, will tour with U S and world representatives on America’s Town Meeting of the Air, and co author a book titled The Color Line Around the World. White was previously married to Leah Gladys Powell, 1922.
In Nanking on August 13 the Chinese Communists labeled Washingtons white paper a confession of failure and interference in China. The Hsinhua news agency said the document exposed Americas insatiable desire for interference and aggression in others affairs.
Honolulu August 13 government set to unload strikebound ships by early next week. Harbor Manager Ben Rush said the territory will not tolerate dock interference and will enforce the emergency act seizing struck stevedoring firms. ILWU voted to condemn the strikebreaking law as 1,680 non union workers are being hired to operate docks.
President Truman named Gen. Joseph L. Collins to succeed Gen. Omar Bradley as army chief of staff and Bradley as chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. Gen. Thomas T. Handy was named to lead the European command, replacing Gen. Lucius D. Clay, with senate approval pending.
William G. Bruce, a lifelong publisher and civic leader, died early today in Milwaukee after several months of illness. He was 93 and active in the community for much of his life.

Operators offered to extend the old wage contract for 20 months but the union rejected the proposal.
A former priest and a divorcee will marry in Phoenix today. Emmett J. McLoughlin, who left the Franciscan order eight months ago, will wed Miss Mary Davis, both residents of Phoenix. The ceremony, performed by Jewish faith judge Charles Bernstein, will take place in Phoenix with friends present in Buckeye.
