Chillon Bowen of Washoe Nevada was arraigned for the Saturday killing of William Stephenson. Bowen says Stephenson threatened him and intruded on Bowen’s home with Mrs Stephenson. he claims he fired to prevent an imminent attack. The coroner’s inquest is deferred until next week and hearings continue Friday.
A Japanese navy vessel saved four crew from a British steamer Oldhamin captured by Russians and later set ablaze on Urapp Island. Two officers remained on the island with a full boat, fate unknown. In Indianapolis, the Luftshine excursion steamer sank ten miles from the city with over a hundred aboard. three bodies recovered and a wider search underway.
CHICAGO August 7 Inga Hanson former Salvation Army girl convicted of perjury in a personal injury suit against Chicago City Railway was taken to Joliet penitentiary today to begin an indeterminate sentence. Since trial she has been confined in Cook County jail hospital claiming paralysis from injury. CLEVELAND August 7 Five of seven executive committee members of the International Bridge and Structural Iron Workers have voted for a strike against American Bridge Company pending action by President Franklin Buchanan.
A severe monsoon flood in British India has caused widespread damage. An abnormal deluge in Bombay and Gujarat provinces renders ten thousand people homeless. crops suffer in Panjab and unirrigated areas.
The remains of Wm. W. Stevenson, killed in San Francisco by Chilton Bowen, will arrive in Reno tomorrow morning. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced tomorrow, with interment likely in Virginia City where the deceased lived for many years.
August 7 Manila reports Major General Corbin hosting a dinner for Taft party leaders with Rear Admiral Mnquist in attendance. Secretary Taft and Miss Alice Roosevelt greet about 3000 guests at a grand Malacanan reception led by Governor General Wright, described as surpassing prior Manila celebrations.
Berlin August 7 Prince Friedrich Henry of Prussia was seized as a spy by guards at Swineniuemlo Pomerania while in ordinary dress taking photographs near forts. He identified himself but was escorted to the fort commandant who ordered his release. Sentries were ordered to arrest all persons photographing fort environs.
Portsmouth NH August 7 disappointment ran high over the delay in arrival of the Russian and Japanese peace envoys. The postponement affected state troops and a revised reception plan, with officials telegraphed and the Mayflower Dolphin and Galveston voyage delayed forty eight hours. A Nantucket light shoals message later noted the squadron passed at 3 40 in good weather and spirits.
Nine-year-old Gracie Wilson of Long Valley Cal died Sunday afternoon in Reno after a nosebleed. She had been in medical care for several days, staying at Wil son Ayres home. Doctors were unable to stop the bleeding and the child, daughter of Mr and Mrs Addison Wilson, had been in poor health for months. Remains to be sent to Doyle on the KCO by Perkins Olver and Guiling tomorrow morning.
Charles Murray of Hazen aged nineteen roamed Chinatown with a pistol yesterday and shot a horse in the leg of a Chinese man. He was fined eighty dollars by Judge Richardson but could not pay and was jailed for forty days. Murray worked on the railroad and claimed not to be a bad man, then was taken to the lockup. Also buried this afternoon was Henry Morrigan in a funeral from Perkins Oliver’s parlors.
New Orleans reports eight new yellow fever cases and eight deaths by 3 PM. Dr. J H White takes charge from Washington guidance as authorities note a hopeful decline in new cases compared with Sunday. Two Italian deaths occur at the emergency hospital and cases near Jefferson parish and Bon Ami prompt regional scrutiny amid train-service suspensions. Quarantines loosen slightly outside infection zones. steamer Columbia returns to Mobile with fever cases and convalescences underway. Archbishop Chanelle’s physician reports slightly improved condition. Archpriest Glerryman hopes for a recovery.
Malcomb McDonald travels to Pittsburgh to confer with Schwab and other owners as the Montgomery Tongpah mining property in Tonopah is placed under a $3,000,000 lien. The deal, nearly closed, prompts McDonald to handle arrangements. Also notes a Washington dispatch renewing Caliente postoffice and a water rights dispute in Walker River court.

In Yokohama August 7 reports say Chinese groups vow to stop using American steamers including the Pacific Mail Company's China. They will seek penalties for violations and any Chinese violating the agreement face heavy fines. American consul general Henry B. Miller is examining the issue and monitoring developments.
The French fleet of eighteen battleships cruisers and torpedo boats anchored in the Solent to spend a week as guests of King Edward and the British navy. Heavy rain and mist masked the ceremony as salutes were exchanged with British forts.
