In 1841 an expedition led by Colonel Unghe McLeal from Austin sought trade with Santa Fe. George Wilkins Kendall chronicled perilous crossings, hunger, and attacks by Kiowa Indians. Captured near San Miguel, Texas goods were seized, and Llawland was killed. survivors endured brutal imprisonment in Mexico before release and return home.
