Steamer City of Venice Sinks After Lake Erie Collision

A night collision off Rondeau Canada between the steamer City of Venice laden with ore and the Seguin results in the Venice sinking with three dead and others badly injured. The Seguin’s second mate refuses to disclose details while rescue boats pluck survivors from the water. The Venice went down fifteen minutes after impact. the cause remains unknown as night lights and chaos followed.

Outlaw Note Leads to Wyoming Pursuit

A note left by Harry Tracy was found pinned to a water well near Ohaw, Spokane. Authorities, including Deputy Sheriffs from Sprague, chase leads toward Rock Lake county in Northern Whitman County as they pursue the escaped outlaw across Washington.

Rescue at Sea Brings Schooner Notice to New York Port

The Sardegna, arriving from Genoa and Naples, towed the disabled American schooner Notice into port after finding her adrift with sixty four aboard. Captain Ramos is believed lost overboard. the mate John F. Pina reported the incident and the towboat delivered provisions.

California Supreme Court rules absolute divorce makes Reno marriages legal

Justice Garcutt and Justices McFarlane and Henshaw hold that a divorce is absolute when recorded, allowing hundreds of marriages in Reno to bypass California one year delay rules. The decision voids a legislative flaw that required a year's wait after divorce before remarriage within or outside the state.

English Girl Missing in Swiss Hills Found After Rescue

English girl Whalley, starting a hike from Ayre to St Luc, lost her way and vanished. A rescue party found her four hundred yards above Ayre with a broken ankle after two nights without food. She endured exposure but, aided by strong health, is recovering.

Velvet workers clash as non union man attacked

In Manchester Conn in August the first violence of the Cheney Meathers strike occurred. Jory Lelater a non union worker accompanied by 16 firm guards was attacked by about 150 strikers on his way to work. He was knocked down by a large stone and seriously injured. One other worker was injured.

County Commissioners Act on Sewer Request and Board Changes

The county board met to consider a sewer for the lumber yard area to connect with the Nevada Meat Company's system but funds were unavailable, so the matter was tabled. H. Thom and others were granted a petition, R. Ryland was removed from the board, and J. F. P. Aftken was appointed to fill the vacancy. The session adjourned after approving town bills and set a meeting for September 1, 1902.

Mississippi Feud Sparks Fatal Pearl River County Fight

A feud between the Gates and Bennet families in Pearl River County led to a clash in which Homer Hennett was killed and his father in law Jonas Crawley was seriously wounded. Culeny Gries fired the shots and escaped.

Timber Lands Sold in Humboldt County by Wisconsin Syndicate

San Francisco August 4. Sayer Mine in Humboldt county California announces the sale of 25 000 acres of timber land in Del Norte to a Wisconsin syndicate led by N C Foster. The deal includes improved mills a small harbor and four miles of railroad. One million dollars are involved.

A cable from Panama dated August 6 reports revolutionary war vessels in Agua Dulce and a fierce battle fought there with unknown results. The U S government claims victory while the Ranger patrols the bay.
