T. E. Hartley known as Tom Hartley died after a short illness at Otterbien Tuesday. He was 51, survived by a widow, two sons, two brothers and a sister. Hartley was brother to H. F. and A. E. Hartley, with ties to Lafayette and Remington communities.

Harvey Davisson escaped serious harm when a switch engine struck his Ford at the Monon railroad crossing on McKinley Ave. in Rensselaer. The car was lifted about fifteen feet along the tracks before the engine stopped. Davisson remained in the car and only injured his leg upon exiting after the impact.
Henry Rochester of Monon sues deputy marshal Orval Rothrock of Monticello claiming undue violence when ejecting Rochester and companions from Monticello depot on July 4. Rochester says he was injured knee by fall on the platform. Rothrock says Rochester and company misbehaved and needed ejecting with persuasion.
State motorcycle patrolman John Sanders warns that many Ryan plates are smeared with grease. He urges wiping plates clean so numbers are plainly visible to enforce vehicle regulations.
State Motorcop Sanders says Hammond leads all cities for license plate violations. He vows a broad drive to curb noncompliance and will target offenders without exception.
During a heavy storm on Monday, a bolt damaged Fat Lambert’s wireless aerial near the Stokes plumbing shop. Plumbers and mechanics at the shop remained unshaken by the shock as the storm raged.
Edison Marshall of Medford Oregon has won the 1921 O'Henry memorial prize of $500 for the best US short story. He previously received the award at a New York banquet. The Society of Arts and Sciences of New York granted the prize for his tale The Heart of Little Shikara set in India. Marshall is the son of former Rensselaer Republican editor Geo E Marshall.

Jesse Martin, wealthy Attica banker and longtime city leader, was found dead by hanging Wednesday at his son Cobb’s home in Pine township. The 54-year-old, a former mayor and central figure in local business, left a note or signals indicating self-inflicted death. coroner inquest pending. He leaves widow and two daughters.
Mr. Constable, a Baptist church member and Knights of Pythias lodge member, served as township trustee and county council member. He lived on his farm for over 50 years, reared a good family, aided the sick and needy, and donated to colleges and charity, leaving 360 acres and other holdings.
In a hard fought Sunday contest Remington defeated Reynolds 4 to 5. The game stayed close throughout with Remington showing the stronger team but Reynolds keeping it fair and square. Remington’s 1922 squad carried itself with pride and sportsmanship.
