Diabetics face triple risk from influenza and pneumonia with about 20 000 U S deaths yearly mostly among seniors and high risk groups. Flu shots available from late September as health officials push for annual immunization alongside diabetes awareness.
Nicole Johnson, crowned Miss America 1999 in Atlantic City, vows to spotlight juvenile diabetes. She wears an insulin pump full time and aims to use her platform to raise awareness while pursuing TV news work. Johnson, 24, from Roanoke Virginia, studied at USF and Regent University and has pageant experience in Florida and Virginia.
World Oswiecim Poland AP reports conservatives erected four 13 foot wooden crosses beside Auschwitz as part of a long running protest. The total crosses near the site reach about two hundred comprising sizes from small to large. The vigil follows Jewish calls to remove a 26 foot cross near the former death camp. The 26 foot cross recalls a 1979 papal Mass and a 1941 Nazi execution site where 152 Polish resistance members were shot.
A Jerusalem court placed Avshalom Ladani, 35, a Jewish settler from Dolev, under effective house arrest for at least a week while awaiting charges in the fatal shooting of a Palestinian teen. Palestinians protested while settlers demanded his release as bond was posted and talking restrictions imposed.
In San Fernando, a family of 14 led a harsh life with abject poverty and alleged torture. Marco Barrera and Petra and Guana Barrera face murder charges with torture in the deaths of two young children, Lupita and Ernesto, alleged by a 13 year old son.
In White Plains, Widower Jim Martyn haunts the courthouse hallway to stare at Carlos Cajigas, the 23 year old accused of killing his wife Kathleen Martyn in a Bronx stable burglary. Martyn hopes Cajigas sees him as the killer faces trial for murder. The case shocks Pelham Manor and the riding community. Martyn sought the death penalty, saying he would push the lethal injection plunger if allowed. The couple’s daughter Katherine, then 18 months, survived and remains unaware of the tragedy.
Libya voiced astonishment and reservations about trying the Lockerbie bombing suspects at Camp Zeist near Soesterberg air base in the Netherlands. Officials want to inspect the site before agreeing to hold the trial there after the Dutch and British governments agreed to use the facility. Soesterberg was a U S Air Force base from 1954 to 1993.
