Primakov May Be OK After All

Primakov, a 68 year old veteran Russian bureaucrat and former KGB head, may be acceptable to the United States despite a history of opposing U.S. policy in the Middle East. He supported lifting U.N. sanctions on Iraq and has backed arms sales to Cyprus and Iran, reflecting Russia’s aim to restore status. His near unanimous approval as prime minister comes as Yeltsin’s grip weakens, but the long term is uncertain and blame may fall on the U.S. if he fails.
