West Virginia among nation’s top river polluters
West Virginia ranked ninth in total toxic discharges from 1992 to 1996, with the Ohio and Kanawha rivers bearing the brunt. Howes Leather Co. dumped all of 296,366 pounds into the Greenbrier, while Bayer Corp. released 15 million pounds into the Ohio. PIRG urged stronger reporting and water protections, naming DuPont, Clearon, FMC, Union Carbide and others as major polluters and proposing a four-point Right to Know expansion.
