Storms lash Gulf Coast as Earl downgrades to tropical storm
Hurricane Earl battered the Florida Panhandle with 80 mph winds, toppled trees and knocked out power to thousands from Florida to Alabama. Panama City Beach logged 23 inches of rain, boats capsized off Panama City, and two fishermen remain missing or dead as crews work through 16 foot seas and rising floodwaters. A tornado killed one person on St Helena Island, South Carolina, with further twisters reported in Georgia and North Carolina as Earl moved toward the Georgia South Carolina line.
