Pentagon finds nuclear stockpile systems not independently Y2K tested

Washington AP reports the Defense Special Weapons Agency failed to independently test three critical systems for Y2K readiness before declaring them compliant under a Defense Department plan. Pentagon Inspectors General say 25 percent of mission critical systems lacked independent verification. Navy spokesman Doubleday says testing is integrated into routine operations with over 200 audits in the past year. Lt. Col. Sivigny adds a failure in these systems would not impede national defense. The agency, now part of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, manages and tests the stockpile and verifies arms control pacts.
