State expands hunting to limit deer population
Charleston AP reports the first does hunting opened the same day buck season began. Antlerless deer may be hunted for three days on private land in 23 counties with a special license and a one-deer daily limit. A second doe hunting phase runs December 7 to 12 on private land and public property in 47 counties. State officials hope to curb rising deer populations troubling farmers. The Legislature debated DNA requirements to reduce herds and was generally opposed by scientists and opponents. DNR officials say the expansion is partly a response to legislation, with some lawmakers predicting agency-led management. An unusually warm day drew about 350,000 deer hunters to the fields.
