Log truck overturns on Route 1 blocking traffic
A fully loaded logging truck driven by Michael B. Tharp overturned on State Route 1 near Clear Fork Road in Spruce at about 4:15 p.m. The crash destroyed the left rear tire, crossed into the westbound lane, struck a guard rail, and blocked both lanes for nearly two hours. Tharp, traveling alone for Telmark Inc., was transported to Raleigh General Hospital for minor injuries. No other injuries or vehicles were involved. Estimated truck damage around $30,000. Load of trees 15 to 20 feet long spilled over an embankment. Tharp was cited for defective equipment and a seat belt violation. Clear Creek Volunteer Fire Department assisted with traffic control.
