Staton Sparks Lead in 23rd House District Race
With 71 percent of precincts reporting, incumbents Rick Staton of Mullens and Joe Sparks of Pineville led the 23rd District race for the House of Delegates. Staton had 37 percent, Sparks 33 percent, and Lena Hill 29 percent. Stover ran unopposed. Staton, a longtime delegate and judiciary chair, aims to reform courts and bolster local revenue flexibility. Sparks serves on three committees and was first elected in 1996. Hill could not be reached for comment. In the 24th District, Eur stace Frederick led with 54 percent over Zona Meskinish as District 24 voters favor experience for November. In the 25th District, early counts showed Flanigan, Wills, Osborne and Barilla, with final results pending. In the 26th District, Mary Pearl Compton appeared headed for another term against Ron Holt. Holt touted campaign issues despite funding challenges.

Four dead in Tucker County plane crash near Elkins
The single engine Beechcraft A36 crashed about 20 miles east of Elkins while en route from Buffalo to Moore County Airport in North Carolina. Pilot Dr. Howard Kidman and passenger Gordon Fancy identified, two other Canadian victims unnamed. Witnesses reports of an explosion conflicting with police notes. wreckage scattered within a one mile radius. FAA said radar contact lost at 11 04 a.m. NTSB director Bob Pearce confirmed. Witnesses described midair impact with wings separated and cockpit far from the debris.
