In the flood aftermath Gov. Cecil Underwood added seven counties to disaster declarations bringing the total to 24. About 41,000 customers lacked power and 91,000 had lost power since the storm began. Three people died in Kanawha County and floodwaters hampered emergency response. Red Cross shelters opened, while rivers crested and flood stage loomed in Clarksburg and Parkersburg.

White House confidant Lindsey urged to testify in Lewinsky probe
Whitewater prosecutors asked a federal appeals court to compel Bruce Lindsey to testify in the Monica Lewinsky investigation despite his attorney-client privilege claim. A White House lawyer criticized the move as beyond imagination while judges questioned whether Lindsey's Clinton work on the Paula Jones suit is at issue. Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr argued Lindsey must testify about conversations with Clinton and aides, not protected by privilege.
