Stocks fell amid worries about weak profits despite a better outlook for Fed rates and the bond market. The Dow finished down 78.22 at 8971.70 after an early 47-point drop, as broad measures sagged near session end. Greenspan warned a slowdown may come, but no immediate rate rise was seen.

Strip-club owners disorganized, fight IRS fraud case
West Virginia defendants Frank and Linda Masiarczyk face charges of underreporting nearly 1 million dollars in income from 1981 to 1993. Prosecutors say the couple ran 10 clubs across the state and kept poor records while living lavishly. Defense calls them a cooperative team with disorganized yet honest habits. The trial, set to last about three weeks, covers alleged underreporting of wages and unreported personal income, plus botched bookkeeping and manager instruction not to file nightly reports.
