American Express earnings lift the Dow 90.88 points to 9,028.24 as it erases an early deficit. Nasdaq gains 2.27 to 1,933.26 while S&P 500 adds 6.47 to 1,147.27 but broader markets lag with declines in smaller stocks. Russell 2000 falls to 433.16, turning negative for the year after earlier gains.
Margie Cox opened Margie's Wooden Crafts in 700 square feet at Opie's convenience store at Route 3 and Pluto Road, drawing 10 to 15 visitors daily. The shop features unfinished outdoor furniture, tables, cabinets, chairs, Amish dolls, patriotic items, Christmas crafts, honey-do hammers, and crafts from about 30 local artisans plus pieces from a Virginia crafter and a Logan County maker. Sharon Gomez from Santa Ana will lead an AAUW Leadership Awareness session with other speakers Susan Dotson of Northrop Grumman and Dr. Shirley Eagan WVU professor emeritus.
The Beckley Campus of Bluefield State College will hold information sessions on August 11 from 2 to 8 p.m. to introduce two new associate degrees, in electrical engineering technology and in legal assisting, at Harper Industrial Park.
