Co workers and students recall Susan Lewis a long time home economics teacher at Shady Spring Junior High who died of a heart attack Sunday. She taught 17 years at the school sponsored Future Homemakers of America and aided annual Christmas drives.
AP reports Willie Nelson tops the lineup for the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta during Labor Day week. The Delta Queen, billed as the world’s third largest stern wheeler, is set to arrive around September 5, with bingo concerts and fireworks also on the program as the event runs through September 6.
The Itmann area hosts an open house for Stone Haven, a renovated homeless shelter serving five counties. Stone Haven provides shelter, meals, medical care, counseling, education, and housing assistance with 32 beds and 24/7 staffing. The program includes an adopt-a-room initiative and honors Italian stone masons related to Itmann’s coal history.
In Nicholas County Circuit Court several May term indictments led to pleas. Donna Barnette admitted welfare fraud involving unreported income and benefits, Dawn Johnson pleaded no contest to unreported unemployment benefits, and Jeremy Adkins Teddy Neil pled guilty to entering without breaking after burglary counts. Michael Waggoner pleaded guilty to delivery of a controlled substance. Fields and Harris had cases continued. Fields faces 26 counts of sexual abuse and Harris two counts as accessory before the fact to sexual assault.
